The East Coast awakens...
Trincomalee, is a mystical port city which hosts the fifth largest natural harbour in the world. Steeped in myth and history this destination has attracted the attention of ancient sea farers such as Marco Polo and Ptolemy and was once the central base for sea traders from China and East Asia. Now, a destination renowned for its stunning beaches and abundant marine offerings for snorkelers and divers, Trincomalee is a tribute to the significant diversity of the Sri Lankan tourism product. The discovery of seas ideal for Whale Watching has tagged Trincomalee as a must-see destination.
The name "Trincomalee" has evolved from the Sanskrit term 'Gorkana' which was derived from the name of a Buddhist temple situated in the region 'Sirigonakanda'; to the Tamil word 'Tirukonamalai'. The Tamil influence came to play when the Anuradhapura and Pollonnaruwa kingdoms were invaded by the South Indian rulers during the thirteenth century. The Tamil name 'Tirukonamalai' denotes the meaning lord of the sacred hill. This port city was a key location in the epic, Ramayana.
